Supported by a community movement, Jessie Price ran as an independent at the 2025 election in Bean, on Canberra’s south side plus Norfolk Island. Together, they succeeded in turning one of Labor’s safest seats into its most marginal. The Community Independents movement has arrived in Labor seats and shows that both major parties can now be held to account.

Jessie Price is a journalist-turned-midwife with a knack for understanding people, the issues most concerning to them and giving them an articulate voice. A natural community builder, she has been able to awake a sense of agency and engagement in a community that felt overlooked and unheard.

Like other Community Independent campaigns across Australia, suddenly there is a real alternative at election time, a real hope for better representation and better outcomes for ordinary people, and a real coming together of people from different viewpoints and backgrounds to strengthen the many things that unite us and work towards a better future.

Jessie Price intends to stand again at the next election due in 2028, and we have an opportunity now to deepen our cooperation as a community, to discuss the solutions that would make Bean a better place to live, and to hold our current representative to account. In a world where democracy seems to be going backwards everywhere, our movement is showing how the simplest thing – working with your neighbours – is able to save it.
